I led a team of cross-disciplinary product architects and programmers in concepting and building the Babalú Perfume Genie, a gesture-controlled, wall-projected interactive retail experience designed to educate Babalú's Miami Beach clientele in the fine art (and science!) of perfumery. We began with structured brainstorming at the Spies & Assassins prototyping lab in New York City, exploring a dozen potential ways to blend a cutting edge digital experience, one that would also dovetail seamlessly into the already whimsical Babalú brick and mortar experience, into their freshly launched digital CRM and e-commerce web platform.
The end product was a gesture controlled, Microsoft Kinect-powered digital projection experience that allows customers to select from a wide array of fragrance families and individual notes in order to find a perfume with exactly the right scent for even the most particular of olfactory aficionados. It only takes a few seconds for a customer to learn how to drag the fragrance notes, represented by shimmering spheres projected onto a wall in the perfume section of the store, into our projected Genie bottle. Once the customer is satisfied with their selection of notes, our Genie consults the ever-changing database of Babalu fragrance products in order to display the results on the wall as well as on a companion iPad web application that allows the customer to purchase the fragrance directly or via an in-store "Fragrance Butler". The final result is a delightful in-store experience that entertains and educates Babalú customers with all of the charm and personality the retailer is renowned for.
